LATEST ON DORA AKUNYILI: DEAD OR ON LIFE SUPPORT?
The secrecy surrounding the current medical condition of Professor Dora Akunyili, Nigeria’s former Minister for Information has sparked off flames of unconfirmed rumors on social media networks that Dr. Dora is dead as many users posted brief messages that read “RIP Dora Akunyili”.
Africa Thisday made efforts to reach the media assistant of the ailing former minister, Mr. Isaac Umunna and our several phone calls were not answered. However a source close to Mr. Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State who recently flew to India to visit Mrs. Dora told Africa Thisday in a phone chat that while rumors of the death of Mrs. Dora Akunyili may be unfounded yet “there are indications that Mrs. Dora is placed on life support”. Another source who is a political associate of Mrs. Dora advised the public to “keep praying for Mrs. Dora Akunyili as God can revive her.”

DORA AKUNYILI: MEDIA ADVISOR ISSUES STATEMENT.
Following rumors of the death of Professor Dora Akunyili, Nigeria’s former information minister which filtered through the social media in the past 72 hours, her media advisor, Isaac Umunna has released an official statement (reproduced below) stating the medical state of Mrs. Dora.
My attention has been drawn to the rumour circulating on social media claiming that immediate past Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, is dead. I have also received several enquiries in this regard.
This rumour is not only baseless but also the height of wickedness. I spoke with Dora’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, and her brother, Dr. Francis Anayo Edemobi, both of whom are with her in the hospital, and they both assured me that she is responding to treatment. The conversation took place from 2:20 this afternoon and lasted for some minutes.
As I said in an earlier statement issued on Wednesday evening, Prof. Akunyili fell sick over the weekend and was first attended to by doctors in Abuja but had to travel to India on Sunday on their advice for further medical attention. She is grateful to Nigerians for their prayers and remains confident that Almighty God will hear our prayers and grant her quick recovery.
The public is advised to disregard any rumours or reports to the contrary. Those engaged in spreading this satanic rumour should desist. What Prof. Akunyili needs at this time is not prophesies of doom or alarming false reports about her health condition but continued prayers and best wishes.

The former minister of Information and Communications, who was also one time dreaded Director of NAFDAC (The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control) in Nigeria has recently been sighted in public domains in a bad shape. Here is part of her official statement made available to the media: ” While it is true that I recently came out of a major sickness, for which I thank Almighty God for delivering me, I have since been declared fit by my doctors and returned to my normal activities. I shed much weight in the course of the sickness – which is normal – but I am well now and only need time to re-grow some flesh. There is nothing to worry about either my health or my present stature. I know that God has kept me alive for a purpose, this National Conference being part of that purpose. For the avoidance of doubt, I am well now, fit, strong enough and ready for this all-important National Conference and I look forward to collaborating with other delegates to chart the way for a better Nigeria.”
Already the social media has been flooded with speculations as to the cause of Mrs. Dora’s sickness as many associate her sickness with spiritual attacks while many others relate her looks with symptoms of some incurable viral diseases.
